Monastery of Yuste
Situated just 4 km from Las Cabañas de la Vera.
The Monastery of Yuste, final retreat of an Emperor.
Foun ded in 1408 and modified in 1557, it is a infused with the spirit of the 15th century.
It was the resting place of Emperor Charles 1st (Carlos 1), who remained at the Monastery of Yuste from 1556 until his death in 1558.
The Convent Church
It was built at the end of the 15th century in the gothic style. The Emperor Charles 1 st followed daily mass from a door thas led onto his room in the Monastery.
The Monastery Gardens
The Monastery is situated in an area of oaks and chestnut tmes, in the midst of nature, with many small streams, which create an amazing atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

At the entrance to the Monastery we can see the bust of Emperor Charles 1 st in memory of the last years of his stay before his death in
1558.
Charles 1 st, a very religiousw man, suffered from gout and asthma, and after being master of half the world, ended his days in an isolated Monastery in the foothills of the Gredos mountains.
Crossing the Sierra de Tormantos (the Tormantos range), between Tornavaca and Jarandilla de la Vera, in the high pass of the Gredos moumtains, Charles 1 st uttered thse wods: “ This is the last gate shall pass through except for the gate of death”.
