Jarandilla de la Vera

Right in full heart of La Vera you can find the town of Jarandilla de la Vera with the castle in which parador Jarandila de la VeraCarlos V took up residence in his retirement journey to Yuste´s Monastery.

STREAMS, PUDDLES.

In Jarandilla there is a main stream named Jaranda, born in the Jaranda mountain range. Both, Mountains and stream of water, are placed in the municipal area of “Guijo de Santa Bárbara” up to 1.900 m high and next to the “Portilla de Jaranda” 2.200 m high.

Following the left bank of Jaranda stream one can find the “Hocino stream” up to 1.500 m high and the “Campanario stream” with its deep sickle among slopes.

Taking into account how much water runs through streams, spring thaw and subterranean water, we do maintain that our land is plenty of springs and drinking fountains.

This amount of streams and springs (including some swamps and other water reservoirs), not only in Jarandilla but also in the large La Vera Land, irrigates our fields, turning them into greenness and enhancing our lands.

FESTIVALS

December 7, before the night falls, the town of Jarandilla celebrates the festival of “Los Escobazos”escobazos21 designed as a celebration with a special Regional Tourist Interest, on honor of The Inmaculada Concepción.

In this festival people from town follow a sacred image, while they carry bundles of brooms on fire. In squares, bonfires are lighted, being some of them of great size.

Men, women and children riding donkeys, horses or mules follow the “ religious banner” carried by the “Majordomo”.

VEGETATION

Climate involves a varied and abundant vegetation, quite different depending on the altitude in which we find ourselves. We could divide it into three main areas:

- In the river bank, one can find plants such as: rockroses, lentiscos, Junipers, Brooms, heathers, tree strawberries, gramineae... trees such as holm and cork oaks.

- In the middle area, we find huge forests of oak trees, pines, eucalyptus, laurels, chestnuts, walnuts, prickle pears, cherry and olive trees. Most frequent broom plants are rockroses, cedar trees, backens... and many other conforming a list too large to enumerate.

- In the highest area, one could find forests of oak trees up to 1.200 m.15.puente parral.jpg_redimensionar

CLIMATE

Due to the great difference of highness existing in the municipal area (from 300 m high up to 2.400 m high) we should take into account that the climate, temperature and humidity, is quite different depending on the place we find in.

In the area in which Jarandilla is located (between 400 m and 800 m) maximum temperatures in summer go up to 35º c. , while during the winter rarely we have negative temperatures.
